Art is a universal human language; it dates back to before the written word even existed. Humans have been making art and spreading their love for it in many different forms. The Live Oak Woman’s Club continues that tradition with their Monday Makers class.
Every monday, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Monday Makers meet at the Woman’s Club to engage in a class and work on different forms of art. The different types of art that are taught every Monday are extensive. In September, the group learned about hanging art, fabric balls, boxes and Halloween themed work. In October, they focused on Zentangles and beaded bookmarks. In November, they worked on gourds, colorful pet portraits and made Christmas cards for The Arc. December’s focus was watercolor, while January and February were focused on colored pencils. March turned to an interesting form of art from Japan called Kinusaiga. In the transition between March and April, the group tried their hand at bookbinding. Most recently, during April, they have been trying quilling. All of those different attempts at art have just been done in the past few months, and the Makers have plans for even more in the future.

One of the best parts about the Monday Makers Club is the community that it builds. The artists do something called the Artist Trading Card every month. They are assigned a topic and create their own trading cards based on the assigned theme. They are then able to swap cards with each other. Many of the members have their own binders full of trading cards that they have made and traded with other artists.
While the group is hosted by the Live Oak Woman’s Club, it’s open to everyone, no matter their age or gender. Each class only costs $5, and everyone works together to create their pieces of art. The Woman’s Club is located at 1304 11th St. S.W. in Live Oak.
