Community rallies behind veteran and service dog after van fire

The Suwannee County community is rallying around James Mugweru, a Marine veteran who is working to rebuild his life after a fire destroyed the van he had been living in with his service dog, Scooby.

The fire left Mugweru and Scooby without a home and destroyed nearly everything he owned. Now, the pair are facing the difficult task of starting over, with Mugweru turning to the community for help with necessities and finding a safe place to stay.

Mugweru recently established a GoFundMe campaign to help cover immediate expenses, including temporary lodging, clothing, food and dog food for Scooby. If enough support is received, he also hopes to eventually work toward obtaining another van or RV that could provide the two with a more stable place to live.

The loss has been especially difficult because the van contained the belongings Mugweru had accumulated throughout his life. In the aftermath of the fire, he and Scooby have been left to navigate an uncertain situation while trying to replace the essentials they need. Through it all, Scooby has remained by Mugweru’s side.

“The experience has been overwhelming, but Scooby has been my constant companion through it all,” Mugweru wrote on the fundraiser.

For Mugweru, asking the community for financial assistance is unfamiliar territory. He said he grew up in foster care and has spent much of his life learning to figure things out on his own.

“Asking for help is something I've never done before,” he wrote. “I grew up in foster care and have always figured things out on my own.”

A friend encouraged Mugweru to create the fundraiser and reach out to others for support. While asking for help was difficult, he said the circumstances have made community assistance especially meaningful.

The GoFundMe has a $2,800 goal. As of the latest update, the campaign had raised $1,075 toward that goal through contributions from community members and others who have learned about Mugweru and Scooby’s situation.

The immediate goal is to provide Mugweru and Scooby with a safe place to stay while helping them replace necessities lost in the fire. Longer term, additional assistance could help them work toward having a vehicle or RV again, giving the pair a more stable home.

“Every donation, no matter the size, will make a real difference in helping us get back on our feet,” Mugweru wrote.
