Good Little Giants came on the national scene in 2014 after winning a major music competition. I recently discovered them through a Spotify promotion. “Arrows” is the first album recommended on their app, and the song titles grabbed my attention, especially “Our Eyes Have Adjusted.”
Immediately, I was captivated by the carefully-crafted sermon, clothed in lyrics and a catchy tune. The song opens with a description of the fall of man, pointing out that “with perfection we were not content.”
The lyrics proceed to pound the ongoing battle with darkness in the human heart, even after becoming aware there is a cure for their eternal disease, stating that, “even after the cure, we pick the poison. And, who takes a hammer to his heart because he likes it better busted?” There are more gems of wisdom wrapped within their message, so I encourage you to give the song and the album some time.
What I discovered was that the entire album is loaded with thought-provoking lyrics that probe deeper reflections on the path of faith, asking tough questions and encouraging adherence to scriptural truth. The group, made up of Scott Phillips, Shane Maze, David Brotzman and Kira Spencer, has released two albums, “Arrows” and “It’s an Ocean!” Several singles have been released, including “Awake O Sleeper" in 2024.
“Arrows” offers an interesting assortment, including Hip-Hop-style tracks like “Tiptoe,” which leaves its hooks stuck in your head while encouraging a bold, unwavering pursuit of truth. “Olly Olly Oxen Free” invites the lost to come out of hiding without fear or dread.
Lead singer and songwriter Scott Phillips even dabbles briefly with Hip-Hop in a rap that speaks of endurance and perseverance in the face of suffering in the crowd-pleasing anthem, “Glory Is Coming.” The band even refreshes an old favorite in their celebratory remake of “How Great Thou Art.”
According to the band's website, “Good Little Giants makes it clear in the album’s liner notes that their prayer is for these songs and their lives to serve as arrows that point back to a living, eternal, all-powerful, loving Creator who placed on his beloved Son the punishment for our sin in order that we might be reconciled to Him.”
Tune in to Spotify or other music platforms to discover more of the musical musings of Good Little Giants. There is nothing little about their powerful messaging, but it sure is good.
