The challenge of getting young people to read versus stare at a screen
When I was young I was neither encouraged or made to read. Being from a broken home with a mom and dad going in opposite directions, I was left to choose for myself, and of course I choose TV over books.
Back then there were only four channels on TV. Yet I still would camp out and feed off the images of the shows and the not so sophisticated commercials in that more innocent period of our history.
I did not discover the power of the imagination and the pleasures of just sitting down and reading a book until I was in my twenties.
Not that I really ever became a voracious reader, but I did get to the place where I truly would choose a page turning book over a screen.
