On Tuesday, May 20, it was announced that Suwannee County Fire Rescue is partnering with Air Methods, a national air medical service provider, to expand emergency medical services across the region by developing a new air medical base.
Set to open this fall at the Suwannee County Airport, the new base—Suwannee Air Rescue—will provide rapid air transport and advanced critical care to residents during emergencies. The partnership aims to reduce response times without adding financial strain on the county or its residents.
"Our partnership with Air Methods helps ensure our residents have access to the highest level of emergency care," said Suwannee County Fire Rescue Chief Dan Miller. "By combining our local knowledge with their advanced capabilities, we're creating a flying ICU that brings lifesaving care directly to our community."
Under the agreement, Air Methods will own and operate the aircraft and supply flight nurses and pilots trained in critical care for a wide range of emergencies. Suwannee County will provide paramedics to support ground operations and integrate with the flight crew during medical responses.
The Air Methods press release emphasized the company's commitment to "accessible and affordable care." The company is in-network with most major health insurers and operates a patient advocacy program to assist with costs, making separate air medical memberships unnecessary.
"We are proud to strengthen our partnership with Suwannee County," said Zachary Nicholson, Regional Business Director at Air Methods. "Together, we're bringing advanced critical care directly to those in need — quickly, efficiently and compassionately. Our mission is to ensure every patient receives the highest standard of care with complete confidence in the team supporting them."
