First Federal Bank has long been an integral part of the community, with locations across all three of Riverbend News’ counties. The bank has consistently supported local families, sports teams and community efforts. Now, the First Federal family is turning to the community for help.
Evan Howell, a 17-year-old Jasper resident, was recently diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) at UF Health Shands. The disease is a form of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. Evan was diagnosed on Oct. 5, 2025.
Since then, the Howell family’s life has revolved around hospital stays, temporary housing and brief moments of normalcy in between. The emotional and physical toll has been significant, especially for Evan as he continues to fight the disease.
Evan’s grandmother, Joy Howell, has strong ties to First Federal Bank. She previously worked as a financial specialist from 2005 to 2011. Rachal Howell, her daughter and Evan’s mother, currently serves as a teller at the Jasper location. Those connections are part of the reason the bank is rallying behind the Howell family during this difficult time.
An account has been set up at First Federal Bank for donations. All contributions will go toward medical expenses, travel costs and other essential needs for the family.
“Your prayers, kindness and generosity mean more to the family than words can express,” the bank wrote on Facebook. “Thank you for standing beside them as Evan continues his brave fight and healing journey.”
Those who wish to donate have additional options outside of First Federal Bank. Contributions can be made through CashApp at $ejoyhowell, Venmo at @ejoyhowell Paypal and Zelle are also available.
