Special Olympics teams from Lafayette County recently visited the Publix supermarket in Live Oak to recognize the store's contributions to Special Olympics Florida. The co-ed cheerleading and powerlifting teams presented the location with a plaque in appreciation of Publix's fundraising efforts to support the organization and its athletes. “We at Publix 1709 love carrying out Publix's mission statement by helping our community,” said Assistant Customer Service Manager Bree Palin, who accepted the plaque. Under the leadership of Melissa Keen and Country Strong Gym, Special Olympics Florida Unified Sports continues to provide training and competition in various Olympic-type sports for people with intellectual disabilities. Currently, the Mayo program is active in competitive cheer and cycling. Community members interested in supporting the programs through volunteer opportunities can contact Bridget Hawk, Sports Training and Competition Manager for Area 2, at (850) 207-9663.
