Selective Service registration is set to become automatic in December

On the national stage, changes are planned for the Selective Service System (SSS). Historically, most American men between ages 18 and 25 have been required to register themselves with the SSS in case a military draft is called. Starting December 2026, however, those in the required group are set to automatically be registered for the military draft.
The automatic registration is part of the National Defense Authorization Act that was signed into law in December 2025. The update shifts the responsibility of registering from the individual to the federal government, which will utilize federal databases to determine eligibility. In general, most men between
