Remembering Suwannee: U.S.S. Suwannee, Part 1

Eric Musgrove County Historian Suwannee County has always been committed to freedom and has furnished men and women to serve their country in every military conflict since before Florida was even a state. In addition to the service of the men and women of Suwannee County, the Suwannee River has lent itself to the names of several naval ships and numerous civilian ships, a complete listing of which would be impossible. However, some vessels stand out in history books. In my earliest years, I cut my teeth on World War II naval history, so this week’s article will be about the famous warship named Suwannee that served during that war.
