She grew up in a well-educated and prominent Southern family. Known among family and friends for her sharp mind, lively spirit and strong sense of justice, she developed an early love for learning, reading and exploring the world beyond her hometown. Even as a young woman, Moon displayed a remarkable independence and determination uncommon for women of her era. She loved nature, teaching and engaging in thoughtful discussion.
