More than a game: SMS esports teams advance to state, redefine competition

Suwannee Middle School’s (SMS) esports teams have had a successful season so far. Now, their hard work is paying off as they enter state-level competition this week. Their success is helping challenge a lingering misconception: that competitive gaming isn’t a “real sport.”
The program, which competes in the Sunshine State Esports League (SSEL), has seen multiple teams rise through the rankings this season, with one of its three Rocket League teams ranked No. 1 in the state and one of two Super Smash Bros. teams at No. 3.
