On Monday, Jan. 13, the Mayo Town Council held its regularly scheduled meeting, which began with the council adopting the agenda for the evening. The council members then approved the minutes from the previous meeting and called for public comments; however, there were no responses. The next agenda item was old business. The only item brought up was the contract with Mott McDonald to fix up the wastewater treatment facility. The council discussed the contract with Mott McDonald for repairs to the wastewater treatment facility. Town Attorney Angela Ball reviewed the contract and noted some typos and minor errors but confirmed that none of these issues affected the contract's terms. The council then authorized the contract, allowing work to commence the day after the meeting. Following this, the council discussed the Taylor McGrew Municipal Cemetery. Council members received an update about an ongoing search for an appropriate site for the cemetery. Garrett Land mentioned that the primary requirement is that the location should be "high and dry." However, since the individual presenting this item was not fully prepared for the meeting, the discussion was tabled. The council then called for department head reports. Sampson Edwards first reported that he had submitted all his requests for the upcoming budget season. Next, Land provided an update on the Mayo Food Mart gas station, stating that the business had resumed pumping during daylight hours. He also shared that the owners were exploring options to reconstruct the covering over the gas pumps. Land suggested that it would be wise for the town to implement annual f ire and life safety inspections, where the fire marshal would inspect commercial businesses for compliance. The council agreed that this was a good idea but decided to hold a workshop to discuss it further. The workshop was then scheduled for Monday, Feb. 10, at 6 p.m. at the Mayo Town Hall. The meeting concluded with the council approving all outstanding bills. The next Mayo Town Council meeting is set for Monday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m. in the Mayo Town Hall, located at 276 W Main St., in Mayo.
