Living God’s Way: The basis of our word or deed

One of the things Paul tells Christians to be thankful for is the knowledge that they can know what Jesus wants them to do or speak. When the basis for our actions is the "name of the Lord Jesus," we can have assurance that we have His authority for our actions (Colossians 3:17).
The phrase "in the name of' is often used to indicate one is acting "under the authority" of someone. This idiom is used in modern language, as well as that of ancient times, to signify the justification of one's actions.
Paul is using it in a religious context. It is used today in both legal and everyday language.
