Local homeschoolers will have an opportunity to test their spelling knowledge at an upcoming spelling bee while also contributing to a good cause. The inaugural Homeschool Spelling Bee will give homeschooled children the chance to claim first, second and third prizes, along with bragging rights, as they spell for a good cause. The cause is to help 7-year-old Live Oak resident Evangeline McKenna, who has been battling cancer for the last five years. Evangeline, who was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS), has been undergoing treatment at a children's hospital in Ohio and is planning to undergo major surgery soon. "I want the spelling bee to be a success for the participants," said Amber Galloway, the host of the spelling bee. "I have a goal to raise $1,000 for the McKennas." According to the event information, the spelling bee will be divided into age groups: 5 to 7 years old, 8 to 11 years old and 12 to 15 years old. There will be a f irst, second and third prize for each age group, as well as an overall winner. Galloway requests a minimum donation of $5; however, any amount is okay. A donation is also not required. Galloway and Sarah Dennis, who is also helping with the event, also request local donations for a silent auction that is planned for the event. Gift cards, car washes and other merchandise are being requested. Most of all, Galloway and Dennis want the community to keep the McKenna family in their thoughts. "The family needs prayers, prayers, prayers," Dennis said. The spelling bee will be held at Friendship Baptist Church on Friday, March 28, at 3:30 p.m. The deadline to enter will be on Friday, March 14. To enter, scan the QR code accompanying this article.
