Following on the heels of “I Can Only Imagine,” released in 2018, the story of MercyMe’s lead singer, Bart Millard (John Michael Finley), continues on the big screen in “I Can Only Imagine 2.” The movie picks up where the original film left off, with Millard and MercyMe experiencing breakout success with their single, “I Can Only Imagine.”
As the bright lights of success are burning, problems brew behind the scenes for Millard and his family. Highlighted in the film is the fragile relationship with his son, Sam (Sammy Dell).
As Tim Timmons (Milo Ventimiglia) joins the band for a big tour, a friendship develops with Millard. As Timmons’s own struggles become apparent, Millard is struck with a new sense of gratitude and begins the process of restoring relationships with his wife, Shannon (Sophie Skelton) and his son.
“I Can Only Imagine 2” is filled with many emotional and inspirational themes that will resonate with its audience. As with many Christian films, the artistic quality faced criticism, and the box office performance has been much lower than that of its predecessor.
Having seen my share of Christian movies, I suggest ignoring others’ opinions and deciding for yourself the merits of the film. Keep in mind that some reviewers have a bias against movies of faith, but questioning the quality of production is fair game. “I Can Only Imagine 2” is currently showing at Valdosta Stadium Cinemas in Valdosta, Ga.
