On Tuesday, March 25, the Lafayette High School baseball team hosted the Branford Buccaneers for a showdown. While the game was a major highlight, the other reason for the gathering was to celebrate the Hornets' seniors.
The game itself was a tough fight for both teams; each inning felt like back and forth between the Buccaneers and the Hornets. In the first two innings, no team was able to get across home plate. In the third inning, the first movement was made on the scoreboard when the Hornets snuck one runner across the home plate. However, the fourth inning was more of the same, with no points added. In the fifth inning, the scoreboard saw more movement when the Hornets had one more player make it across home plate. However, that would be the last point scored the entire game, as the sixth and seventh innings saw no more movement. The Hornets won the game 2-0.
Trevor Mares (#5) and Jordan Murphy (#11) stood out from the game, as the only two runners to make it across home plate during the game. Mares, though, deserved double credit because he, along with Garrett Taylor (#9), were the two individuals able to bat in the scoring runners. Hyatt Richardson (#24) stood dominant on the mound, having a total of 11 strikeouts.
On the other side of things was Keaton Brown (#12) for the Buccaneers. Impressively, due to his unique pitching style, Brown only gave up a total of four hits. On top of that, the team's fielding was hard at work, successfully stopping all but two attempts by runners to make it to home plate.
However, the real highlight of the evening was the Hornets' Senior Night celebration. There were five total seniors to be celebrated: Murphy, Harris Johnson, Noah Lamb, Richardson and Mares. They each were given a moment to voice their gratitude and their plans for the future. The next Hornets game will be Thursday, April 10, at 6 p.m. against Trenton High School in Trenton. The next Buccaneers game will be Friday, April 11, at 7 p.m. against the Wakulla Christian School in Wakulla.
