However, the Wilsons Mills, N.C., native served to protect its citizens on the frontlines as a soldier in the United States Army. Born on Sept. 13, 1938, Garner grew up in North Carolina, where he graduated from the Johnston County School District. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army on Nov. 5, 1956, during the early years of the Vietnam War.
