During the regular meeting of the Hamilton County District School Board on Tuesday, Aug. 11, the board announced there were no transportation issues on Monday, Aug. 10, the first day of school. District staff said this was a welcome change, since the first day of school invariably has some glitches. The district extended words of appreciation and congratulations to the entire staff of both Hamilton County Elementary School (HCES) and Hamilton County High School (HCHS), especially those directly involved in student transportation, for a job well done.
Later, the school board discussed school improvement plans for both HCES and HCHS. For HCES, the focus will be on sustaining the school’s “B” grade and working toward even more improvement. HCHS will focus on improving English Language Arts skills, especially in writing.
The board then approved a $49,000 expenditure for safety and security upgrades for the schools.
Additionally, the board approved a professional services contract between the school district and Juanita Torres for migrant services and reporting. It was announced that funding for migrant services was down by $100,000, primarily because many families are no longer considered “migrant” since they now have more permanent residency.
The board also decided there was no change to the Parent/Family Engagement Plans for either school.
The final item of business was changing the time for the next meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 8, to 5:05 p.m. because state statute requires Truth in Millage (TRIM) meetings to be held after 5 p.m.
