The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported mental health crisis involving a male subject on Friday, Aug. 7, with the situation ultimately resolved peacefully after a lengthy period of communication and negotiation.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were dispatched early Friday evening, Aug. 7, after receiving a call concerning a male who was possibly experiencing a mental health crisis. When deputies arrived, they observed the man in possession of a firearm. The sheriff’s office stated the man did not point the firearm at deputies and made no threats toward law enforcement officers or other individuals. He subsequently returned inside his residence.
Sheriff Brian Creech was able to establish communication with the man and maintain a dialogue with him as law enforcement worked to bring the situation to a safe resolution.
Additional law enforcement agencies were requested to assist the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office and provide additional resources at the scene. Deputies and assisting agencies remained on scene while communication with the man continued.
After a lengthy negotiation and communication period, the man voluntarily exited the residence and was safely taken into custody for a mental health evaluation. The sheriff’s office reported that no other citizens were in danger during the incident. No injuries were reported involving the man, law enforcement officers or members of the public.
The sheriff’s office said the incident demonstrated the importance of patience, communication and de-escalation when responding to individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. Through the efforts of deputies, Sheriff Creech and the assisting law enforcement agencies, the situation was brought to a peaceful conclusion without injury.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office expressed its appreciation to the assisting agencies for their support and cooperation during the response.
