Tom Moffses, the Delegate for Hamilton County in the Third Congressional District of Florida, has had a remarkable experience representing his community at this year's Republican National Convention (RNC). Having flown into Milwaukee, Wis., on Saturday, July 13, Moffses quickly settled into the convention's rhythm. The welcome session began the following evening, with the convention itself officially starting on Monday, July 15, and spanning a total of four days. Each day, centered around different themes, has been filled with day and night activities, including key moments such as the Vice Presidential and Presidential nominations on Monday.
"Florida has been extremely well represented," Moffses noted with pride. So far, a few notable speakers include State Senator Joe Gruters, U.S. Representative Byron Donalds, Senator Rick Scott, Governor Ron DeSantis, and Senator Marco Rubio.
Moffses recounted the powerful atmosphere, especially following the unexpected appearance of former President Donald Trump on Monday night. Moffses noted his appearance, initially slated for later in the week, seemed to electrify the convention, fostering a sense of strength and unity among attendees following the assassination attempt on the former president's life.
"It's historic," Moffses added. "There are so many people behind Trump, even the people who were skeptical before or maybe not even thrilled with him. You can see that there's a whole new respect for him right now. So, [the convention is] just taking on a whole different atmosphere, and I just think it's electric."
One of Moffses's key responsibilities was joining Florida's other delegates in signing the official nomination document for Trump, who won the Primary Election. He expressed pride in his role, ensuring Florida's pivotal vote was cast to put the nominee over the top.
However, his time in Wisconsin hasn't been all work. Moffses stated he had been impressed with Milwaukee's hospitality and the extensive security measures put in place. He shared his positive experiences exploring the city, including attending a Milwaukee Brewers game. Despite initial concerns from friends and family about safety, Moffses expressed he felt secure and welcomed throughout his stay. He continued to reflect on his time at the convention, describing it as an exhilarating experience. Moffses emphasized the ever-present sense of unity and the opportunity to form lasting connections with delegates from across the country.
"I'm thrilled to represent the State of Florida," Moffses continued. He explained he had been part of two other conventions, once as a spectator in Tampa and again as the alternate delegate for the third congressional district. During that time, the convention was held virtually due to the rise of COVID-19. "I'm thrilled to represent Hamilton County and the region. I hope and pray that what I've done is represent them well, and I think that I have."
Among the speakers for Wednesday night, July 17, are several Florida representatives, Veterans, "everyday Americans" and Donald Trump Jr., all leading up to the keynote speaker, J.D. Vance, who Trump has selected as his running mate. The convention will draw to a close on Thursday night, July 18, with Trump officially accepting the nomination for re-election.
