I’ve never related much to Peter in the Bible – you know, the one jumping out of boats and walking on water with wild, bold faith. Nope, a recent message at Church reminded me that I am in fact more like Thomas.
Yes, that Thomas. The one who doubted! The one who needed to see Jesus’s wounds to believe He was really standing there, resurrected. For the longest time, Thomas got a bad rap. But lately, I’ve come to see him as incredibly relatable.
Because sometimes, faith doesn’t look like a confident leap, it looks like showing up with shaky knees, praying with a lump in your throat, and clinging to hope in the dark.
Next month, my daughter begins the long journey of a bone marrow transplant. It’s not one of those moments where faith feels easy. There are questions we can’t answer, outcomes we can’t predict, and long days ahead that I wish with all my might that I could fast-forward through. But this is where Thomas comes in!
Jesus didn’t shame Thomas for his doubt. No, He met him there. He invited him to touch His side, to lean in close. And Thomas responded not with guilt, but with a deeper, and a more personal faith. One that said, “My Lord and my God.”
That’s the kind of faith I’m leaning on right now. Not the picture-perfect kind that always knows what’s coming. But the kind that says, “God, I trust YOU, even when I can’t see the whole picture.” Especially then!
And in the meantime, we’ll stock up on hand sanitizer, fill the fridge with comfort food, and keep the coffee brewing strong. We’ll laugh when we can, cry when we need to, and hold tight to the truth that God walks with us – not just in the miracles, but in the waiting rooms, the long nights, and the unseen battles.
If you’re praying folks, we welcome those prayers. If you all are coffee people, feel free to donate a cup. And if you’re somewhere between faith and fear today, just know – there’s room for you, too.
Even Thomas got to see the miracle. And I believe, with all my heart we will too.
