Following two days of testimony, Desmond Leon Gibbons learned his fate inside the Hamilton County Courthouse on Wednesday, Oct. 22, as a jury found him guilty of all six charges stemming from a 2023 investigation. Judge Jamie Tyndal, who presided over the case, sentenced Gibbons to six life sentences.
According to trial testimony, the incident began at the SunStop on US Highway 129, near Interstate 75, on July 31, 2023. The victim, whose identity will remain protected, testified she had met Gibbons when she was returning from a trip to Disney World with her two children, ages 2 and 5 months, celebrating her son’s second birthday. According to the victim, Gibbons walked up to the victim at the store and asked multiple times for her phone number including offering to take her shopping at Walmart in Live Oak, where she needed to go before returning home to Georgia. She followed him to Walmart following the exchange.

However, the situation escalated when Gibbons allegedly pulled a gun on the victim in the supermarket parking lot while her children sat in the backseat. According to the victim’s testimony before Assistant State Attorney Travis Munden, she had agreed to give Gibbons a ride to his truck because of a rainstorm. Instead, when he brandished his, Gibbons forced her to drive to a residence in Hamilton County, where he repeatedly sexually assaulted her. Gibbons had also filmed himself committing the acts.
According to an arrest report filed by Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) Investigator Kim Lane in August 2023, Gibbons had allegedly consumed large quantities of cocaine throughout the night, which heightened the fear the victim had of Gibbons. He also took possession of her phones when he entered her car, restricting her from calling for assistance.
At one point during the incident, forced to leave her children at the Hamilton County residence, she was forced to drive Gibbons back to Live Oak to pick his truck up and return. Gibbons continued to assault the victim upon their return.
After Gibbons assaulted the victim, he allegedly threatened her, warning that if she reported the incident to authorities, he would have her and her family killed, claiming connections to the sheriff and gang members.
Shortly after leaving the residence, she went to seek help for directions to Walmart, but her car stopped working at a gas station, where Suwannee County Commissioner Maurice Perkins was shopping at. The victim said when she told him about what happened, he comforted her and assisted with getting her the help she needed. Riverbend News attempted to contact Perkins for comment, but he was unable to be reached at press time.
Gibbons was ultimately arrested during a traffic stop, still having possession of the victim’s cell phones. He was also allegedly in possession of cocaine during the traffic stop, according to the arrest affidavit.
After the second day of testimony, the jury found Gibbons guilty. According to the Hamilton County Clerk of Court’s Office, he was sentenced to life in prison, with a mandatory minimum of 10 years for each count. The sexual assault sentences will run concurrently, while all other charges will run consecutively to one of the sexual assault sentences.
“I am pleased that justice was done against Mr. Gibbons,” said Munden following the sentencing. “[Gibbons] was a serial rapist who preyed upon marginalized victims. With the six life sentences he received from the court, he will not be able to harm another woman again.”
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, with assistance from the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
