The Florida Department of Revenue recently exempted certain items from sale tax holidays. These following items will always be exempt beginning on Friday, Aug. 1.
Batteries. These sizes will become exempt permanently: AA-cell, AAA-cell, C-cell, D-cell, 6-volt and 9-volt.
Bicycle helmets. All bicycle helmets are becoming exempt after Friday, Aug. 1.
Carbon monoxide alarms. According to the Florida Statutes (F.S.), these alarms mean a “device that is meant for the purpose of detecting carbon monoxide, that produces a distinct audible alarm and that meets the requirements of and is approved by the Florida Building Commission.”
Fire extinguishers. According to F.S., a fire extinguisher is:
• Portable and can be carried or on wheels.
• Manually operated.
• Can be recharged/nonrechargeable.
• Uses different “extinguishing agents” that are released when pressure is applied.
• Installed, serviced, repaired, recharged, inspected and hydrotested based on standards of the National Fire Protection Association, manufacture procedures and the Code of Federal Regulations.
• A nationally recognized testing laboratory lists the fire extinguishers.
Ground anchor systems and tie-down kits.
Insect repellent. Any products registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that repel insects and are for skin.
Life jackets. Approved by the U.S. Coast Guard and is meant to be worn to help someone float in the water.
Portable gas cans. Five gallons or less of portable diesel or gas fuel cans.
Portable generators. 10,000 running watts or less of portable “engine-driven” generators.
Smoke detection devices. According to F.S., this device is “an electrical or battery-operated device which detects visible or invisible particles of combustion.” Applicable devices are listed by Underwire Laboratories, Inc., Factory Mutual Laboratories, Inc. or other nationally testing standards.
Sunscreen. Cosmetics/products that are not meant to “absorb, reflect or scatter ultraviolet radiation” are not applicable.
Waterproof tarpaulins. One thousand square feet or less of flexible waterproof tarps/sheeting.
