Florida bill imposes new voter identification requirements

A bill passed by both the Florida House and Senate and now awaiting Gov. Ron DeSantis’s signature will require voters to show proof of citizenship at the ballot box.
House Bill 991, which the House passed along political party lines on Thursday, March 12, and which the Senate had earlier passed, imposes new voter identification requirements. The bill, if signed by the governor as expected, is set to take effect on Jan. 1, 2027.
HB 991, titled Election Integrity, requires that persons swear or affirm that they have reviewed the voter registration instructions, are U.S. citizens and understand the penalties for providing false information.
