The Suwannee County community continues to rally around Ernie Clayton and his family as they navigate the challenging road following Clayton’s recent heart transplant surgery.
Friends, family and supporters have joined together in prayer and generosity to help the Clayton family during this difficult season. Donations have been raised to assist with medical appointments, transplant-related expenses, medications, travel, temporary relocation costs and many day-to-day challenges that come with ongoing treatment and recovery.
According to updates shared by the family, local coffee shop Ellianos raised more than $6,200 through community support. The fundraiser raised $3,131, with the owners of Ellianos matching the price, totaling a whopping $6,262 for the family. The family expressed deep gratitude for each contribution, prayer and encouraging message they received throughout the process.
Clayton’s health battle began in August 2024 when he went to the emergency room believing he had pneumonia. Instead, doctors diagnosed him with congestive heart failure and discovered his heart was functioning at only 10%. After months of treatment and hospitalizations, he was transferred to Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla. In March 2026, doctors informed the family that he had six months or less to live without a heart transplant.
On April 30, Clayton was approved for a heart transplant and officially placed on the transplant list on Saturday, May 2. Late on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10, the family received the call they had been praying for: a donor heart had been found. The transplant surgery was successfully performed on Monday, May 11, after doctors determined the donor heart was a 99% match.
Recently, the family shared the exciting news that Clayton had officially been discharged from the hospital following his transplant surgery. As he exited the unit, nurses at Mayo Clinic celebrated the milestone alongside him and his loved ones.
“Mayo Clinic has been such a blessing through this process,” Miranda Clayton, shared in an update.
While the discharge marks a major step forward, Clayton’s recovery journey is still ongoing. The family said he must continue attending regular follow-up appointments, including weekly heart biopsies every Tuesday, to monitor any sign of rejection.
Another recent update shared that Clayton had been reduced to only two chest tubes and was continuing to make progress in his recovery. Following discharge, the family transitioned to temporary housing in Jacksonville, Fla., while they adjusted to life after transplant surgery and continued learning the daily routines and care required for moving forward.
“There’s a lot to learn as we adapt to this new daily life,” the family shared. “Our journey is far from over.”
Clayton, who was able to watch his daughter Ellie’s graduation from the hospital before being discharged on Tuesday, May 26, said he is thankful for the second chance he has been given.
“This has given me a second chance at life. For a while, I thought there was no hope,” he said. “I won’t lie, this is the worst pain I’ve ever experienced, but it’s worth it to continue my life with my wife and kids. I want to thank the community. I wouldn’t be here without my wife’s care, and we couldn’t have managed financially without everyone’s support. Thank you all for everything.”
