Students, teachers and community members alike are mourning the loss of beloved Hamilton County High School (HCHS) teacher Raven Merine, who passed away following a battle with breast cancer.
Her passing was announced on Thursday, Feb. 26, on a social media page dedicated to chronicling her fight with the disease.
“Raven fought a good fight until the very end,” the post stated. “She was a ray of sunshine, bringing light, love and warmth to everyone who knew her. Though our hearts are heavy, we trust that God called her home for a special reason.”
Merine was a science teacher at HCHS, having taught sixth and eighth-grade students since 2018. Last year, she was named Teacher of the Year at HCHS.
“When you see her, you see what inspiration is in a person,” HCHS Principal Ryan Mitchell said of Merine during the Teacher of the Year banquet. “Mrs. Merine comes to work every day and brings her absolute best, and she gets the best out of her students.”
When Riverbend News interviewed Merine last year on her illness, she had been undergoing treatment for stage four triple-negative breast cancer. It was a battle she fought to the end, but through it all, she was grateful for the community's support.
“We don’t think that our thank-yous are enough to express our gratitude,” Merine said. “I hope everyone knows how much we depend on their prayers and we depend on their faithfulness to get us through this season.”
During that time, students in the HCHS Beta Club organized a Walk-a-Thon on the football field to benefit Merine and her family, helping offset some of the costs of her treatment. The community also celebrated her 31st birthday that September with a parade that drove by her home in Jasper.
HCHS also shared its appreciation for Merine on social media following her death.
“Mrs. Merine brought energy, positivity and care into every interaction she had as an educator,” the post stated. “Her pride in our school and her students will stay with us for years to come. We are deeply grateful for the impact she made during her time with us.”
The post also stated that her loss was immense for the school community. Because of the strong emotional bond Merine built with her students and the district, HCHS has offered the school’s guidance counselors to support those grieving.
Merine, a lifelong Hamilton County resident, graduated from HCHS in 2012 as salutatorian. She went on to complete four years of college at Florida A&M University and married her high school sweetheart, Charles Merine. She is survived by husband and four children.
Services will be held at Jesus the Living Word Deliverance Church, beginning with a wake on Saturday, March 7, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The church is located at 1138 N.W. US 41, in Jasper. Family and friends will be received at the Merine home following the wake.
The homegoing celebration will be held at the old HCHS auditorium on Sunday, March 8, at 1 p.m., located at 1153 N.W. U.S. 41, in Jasper, followed by a repast at the J.R.E. Lee Community Center, located at 4280 SW CR 152 in Jasper.
Per Merine’s wishes, black clothing is not permitted at the service. Attendees are asked to wear pink, white or gold, if possible.
