The American Red Cross is an organization that provides relief and support to those in crisis, supporting families and communities through disasters, from house fires to natural disasters around the world. Approximately 95% of Red Cross workers are volunteers.
The Red Cross is actively seeking community members to become “shelter heroes,” volunteers trained to assist their neighbors and communities when disaster strikes. Shelter heroes are extremely important figures in the Red Cross, assisting in providing shelter, food, support and comfort to victims of disaster, especially with the growing number of hurricanes and other large-scale emergencies.
