During their regular meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 4, members of the Hamilton County Board of County Commissioners continued discussion on how to handle erosion problems at the Alapaha Commerce Center.
County Attorney Andrew Decker informed the commissioners that the original construction company, Curt’s Construction Company, has now expressed an interest in discussing the completion of erosion repairs at the Commerce Center. Decker stated he did not feel Curt’s Construction had lived up to its contractual obligations.
The county took bids to complete the work after Curt’s Construction hesitated to address the erosion problem. Bids were sought to remedy the problem, and John C. Hipp Construction Equipment Co. submitted the lowest acceptable bid of $138,607. In the meantime, the original construction company had offered to repair the erosion at a lower price. Decker suggested that the commissioners defer awarding the bid to Hipp Construction to allow Curt’s Construction to hold discussions.
“I don’t want to pay [Curt’s Construction] another nickel,” said Commissioner Travis Erixton, echoing the sentiment of his fellow Commissioners.
Postponing the awarding of the bid to Hipp Construction does carry the risk of them withdrawing their bid and the county having to seek new bids.
The commissioners also approved a request from Nutrien to cross U.S. 41, County Road 137 and Eight Mile Still Road in mid-September. Crossing U.S. 41 will take place midday on Saturday, Sept. 12. The crossing of County Road 137 is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 14, during the evening hours. The crossing of Eight Mile Still Road is set for Wednesday, Sept. 23, during the evening. These dates and times were necessary for coordination with the railroad company.
Action regarding carpeting for the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office administrative office was postponed until after budget hearings. The price for new carpet is estimated to be approximately $28,000.
Due to a conflict with Election Day, the meeting originally scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Aug. 18, has been changed to Monday, Aug. 17, at 9 a.m.
The Hamilton County Board of Commissioners meets in the Courthouse, located at 207 1st St. N.E., in Jasper.
