A local family is reeling after a recent tragic accident and needs help raising funds to cover medical expenses related to the injuries sustained. Jennifer Raulerson created a GoFundMe page after her daughter-in-law, Taylor Woods parents, Matt and Michelle Woods, and younger brother Mason were involved in a vehicle accident as they were traveling home on Saturday, Dec. 28. "The Florida Highway Patrol made it clear that the accident was not the fault of the family," Raulerson said. "However, the investigation is ongoing, and we have not been able to receive a crash report of the incident." According to Raulerson, the information that was provided stated the family was returning from a Christmas celebration in Tallahassee. As they merged onto U.S. Highway 90 from the Interstate 10 off-ramp in Suwannee County, a truck crossed into the opposite lane, hitting the family head-on. "The driver was alert and talking to the troopers," Raulerson said. However, she added that she was unsure of the truck driver's condition. The family was transported to Shands UF Hospital in Gainesville, where Matt and Michelle underwent crucial surgery to repair broken bones and other various injuries sustained in the wreck. Mason suffered a brain bleed, which has since stabilized. He was released from the hospital, however, he will need 24-hour supervision for a while. Michelle suffered multiple broken bones, including a fractured femur, and will be unable to move on her own for the foreseeable future. She is expected to be released from the hospital later this week but will need 24-hour supervision due to the injuries sustained. As for Matt, his injuries were significant, as he has been on a ventilator since the crash and is still in critical condition. "His legs were crushed in the accident, and he suffered a traumatic brain injury," Raulerson said. "He also broke multiple bones in his back and has undergone a few surgeries." It is unclear when Matt will be discharged. However, he will have a long road to recovery. Despite the seriousness of the incident, the family has remained optimistic and has been close while Matt, Michelle and Mason continue to recover from their injuries. Unfortunately, the medical bills and lodging costs have been stacking, causing the family to seek the help of the community to help cushion the costs. "So far, the children have been shouldering the costs," Raulerson said. As of right now, the GoFundMe has raised over $5,600 of its $9,000 goal. The family hopes to continue to raise these funds to assist with the medical bills. The family has also set up an account at First Federal Savings Bank. To donate to the family, visit GoFundMe.com and type "Please Help the Woods Family After Tragic Accident" into the search bar. Donations can also be accepted at First Federal Savings Bank under the name “For the Benefit of the Woods Family.” Provide the last four of the account, 0008, when making a donation. The bank is located at 1102 N. Ohio Ave. in Live Oak.
