It’s always interesting to see what legislation lawmakers will propose during a legislative session.
Currently in the Agriculture, Conservation and Resiliency Subcommittee is House Bill 753, which seeks to have the American flamingo supersede the mockingbird as the official state bird. The one-page bill gives no reason for the proposed change, whose companion legislation, Senate Bill 918, also is in committee.
The mockingbird has been Florida’s official state bird since 1927, when the state was largely agricultural, not today’s bustling state. The mockingbird also is the official state bird of Texas.
