Emmett M. Mathis, age 83, of Jasper, passed away on Friday, Oct. 30, 2020, at his home.
Emmett was born on Feb. 13, 1937, to the late Floyd and Nellie Bennett Mathis. Emmett graduated from Jasper High School in 1955, and soon after, joined the United States Air Force where he proudly served his country. Retired Master Sgt. Mathis made a career in the Air Force for 23 years. Upon retirement, he returned to his childhood hometown and went to work at the Valdosta Daily Times in the circulation department. Emmett had many hobbies, a few of which included antique tractors, vacationing in the mountains, bluegrass festivals and camping. He was a member of the Cushman Motor Scooter Club, the Southeastern Car Club and the local VFW 8095. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Evelyn Carey Mathis; his children: Denise (Samuel) Wetherington of Jasper, Diane Gist of Lake Park, Ga., Carl (Mary) Horst of Valdosta, Ga., and Susan (Scott) Armstrong of St. Louis; six grandchildren; Scott Montague, Lindsey James, Stephanie Davis, Meagan Vaughan, Christopher Armstrong and Rachel Oliver-Childress; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 4, , at Divonia Baptist Church in Jasper. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the local VFW Post 8095 at P.O. Box 1523 Jasper, Fla. 32052 or to Divonia Baptist Church, P.O. Box 142, Jasper, Fla. 32052. Harry T. Reid Funeral Home in Jasper was in charge of arrangements.
