Suwannee History: Horace Filmore Dexter’s home

Over the years, Suwannee County has lost an untold number of its historic houses and buildings to fire, demolition or neglect. This is especially true for many of the homes within the original city limits of Live Oak, which was incorporated in 1878. In most cases, the homes (usually wood frame) were replaced with brick-and-mortar stores and office buildings as the population increased. Once-favored neighborhoods became a shell of their former selves as homes crumbled, demographics changed, or progress and vehicles shifted most citizens into the “suburbs” outside of the original city limits.
