A Festival of Lessons and Carols will be presented at Covenant First Presbyterian Church, located at 421 White Ave., in Live Oak, at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec 17.
Lessons and Carols had its origin at Truro Cathedral in England on Christmas Eve 1880, when a service of scripture and supporting carols was developed by F. W. Benson, the Bishop of Truro. Some 38 years later in 1918, this format was adapted for Christmas Eve at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, England.
The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) broadcast from King’s College helped to popularize the Service of Lessons and Carols, and it was quickly duplicated by cathedrals and small churches throughout the world. The heart of the service continues to this day – that is, the retelling of the Christian’s story of faith from the fall of Adam to the coming of the Word Incarnate.
The Festival of Lessons and Carols in Live Oak will feature a choir of over 20 voices directed by Bill Poplin. They will be accompanied by organist, Linda Poplin; pianist, Genie Harris; percussionist, Carl Manna; and handbell ringers, Marty Fraser and Sue Tuell. This is a worship service, so there is no charge for attending. A time of fellowship will follow.
