As the holiday season approaches, the American Legion Harry C. Gray II Memorial Post 107 in McAlpin is gearing up to host its annual "No Vet Left Alone" holiday dinners on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The main hall, located at 10726 142nd St., will be transformed into a warm and welcoming space for Veterans and their families to enjoy a festive meal, companionship and understanding.
Recognizing the challenges faced by Veterans and their families, especially those who are alone or separated from loved ones during the holidays, Post 107 has made it a mission to ensure that no Veteran feels isolated during this time. The community-driven event provides a free holiday meal to Veterans and their family members, fostering a sense of togetherness and support.
"We found that there are many who are alone or don't have family close by to spend the holiday with. Our goal is to let them know they aren't alone," stated Tammy Schoen, secretary for Post 107's Auxiliary.
The holiday season can be particularly challenging for Veterans and families who have lost a loved one. With the aim of providing solace and unity, the No Vet Left Alone initiative becomes even more crucial during this time of year.
"Statistically, Veteran suicide goes up tremendously during this time of year, and we want the community to know our Post 107 family is there during this time with dinner, companionship and understanding. If you don't have family, come have dinner with ours," Schoen said.
Post 107's commitment to supporting Veterans' mental health was further demonstrated with the kickoff of their holiday suicide prevention program. On Thursday, Nov. 16, the post hosted a special lunch and learn session with the Vines Hospital from Ocala. The session focused on the benefits and resources included in the Compact Act for mental health and substance abuse.
The post plans to continue its monthly lunch and learn series into December, with a session dedicated to dietary considerations for chronic health conditions and prevention.
Veterans and their families are encouraged to join Post 107 on Thursday, Nov. 23, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a free holiday meal. The American Legion Harry C. Gray II Memorial Post 107 is located at 10726 142nd St., in McAlpin.
