An 8-year-old girl was left in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to board a school bus early Tuesday morning, Oct. 10, in Jasper.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, the girl was waiting on her school bus in her driveway on the east side of U.S. Highway 41. At approximately 7:10 a.m., she proceeded to cross the roadway when the bus stopped in the southbound lane adjacent to her with its stop signs deployed and lights flashing.
At the same time, a sport utility vehicle driven by a 19-year-old male from Mayo was traveling north on U.S. Highway 41. The driver failed to stop for the school bus, causing the left outside mirror to strike the girl.
The 8-year-old was airlifted to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville with critical injuries.
