Louis Braille
Louis Braille was born 20 miles outside of Paris, France, on Jan. 4, 1809. At the age of 3, he suffered a life-altering eye injury that left him completely blind by the time he was 5-years-old. However, he was determined to remain upbeat about his circumstances and continued to flourish throughout life. With very few resources for the visually impaired in place, Braille surprised everyone when he excelled in school and received a scholarship to the Royal Institute of Blind Youth (RIBY) (now the National Institute for Blind Youth) in Paris.
