It was business as usual on Tuesday, July 18, during the Lafayette County School Board's regular meeting. Following the approval of a few changes to the agenda, the board approved the previous meeting's minutes, along with four items on the consent agenda.
After approving various action items and reappointing Darren Driver and Taylor McGrew to the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) Advocacy Committee, the board turned to discussion on a revision of the human resource job description from last month. At the previous regular meeting, the school board voted 2-2 for the approval of the district administrative position. After the vote, however, the board decided a few changes needed to be made to the wording of the description.
Rather than preferring a Master's Degree and an Educational Leadership Degree, the description was changed to preferring a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited university. Upon asking what the pay for the position would be, the board was informed the salary would be $89,330 with benefits, and $68,059 starting pay without benefits. Members were then informed 25 percent of the position's pay would be covered by federal projects, while the other 75 percent would be covered by the district's general fund.
Board member Jeff Walker made a motion to approve the revision of the human resource job description. However, no second was made.
“Well, I gave my reasons before, so I'm not going to reiterate,” said board member Marion McCray.
Her comments were followed by Driver, who stated he still had a lot of “unanswered questions” he was concerned with, especially going into a new budget year. “That's really my main concern right now,” Driver stated.
With no second being made, the motion died and the school board proceeded with the remainder of its action items before adjourning. The next regular Lafayette County School Board meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, in the School Board Administration Building, located at 363 NE Crawford St., in Mayo.
