Karlos Murphy, the lone Lafayette High School track member to compete at the FHSAA State Championship stage, was set for his opportunity on Wednesday, May 17, in Jacksonville, Fla., at the University of North Florida, in the high jump event. Murphy placed second at the Regional Championship with a jump of 1.82 meters and, therefore, was eager to test his skills against the state's best. However, his competitors were only one of the obstacles he had to worry about, as the clouds began rolling overhead early that morning. Then, after hours of a rain delay, the field was back in action. Murphy was hoping to build on his previous jump of 1.82 meters, but that would be his best at the State Championships. Murphy placed inside the top 10, but landed just one spot off the podium with a ninth- place finish overall.
