The Lafayette High School Hornets went on the road to Apopka, Fla., on Friday, Sept. 25, to meet the Flame of West Oaks Academy. The Hornets improved their overall record to 2-1 after defeating the Flame, 37-22.
The Hornets went up in the first part of the game and carried a 14-6 advantage going into the third quarter. The Hornets extended their lead with a touchdown pass late in the third quarter. The Hornets were not finished and continued their scoring frenzy to build a 37-6 advantage by the end of the third quarter. The Flame did manage to fight back, but in the end, it was the Hornets who would carry the day, 37-22.
Mario Thomas went eight-for-12 passing for 128 yards. Thomas added 121 rushing yards on 13 rushing attempts, with one rushing touchdown. Monte Gillyard added 73 yards on 10 attempts to the Hornets' ground game.
Next, the Hornets (2-1) will host a long-time rival, the Buccaneers of Branford High School. The Bucs are coming into the game with a 3-0 record after defeating the Cardinals of Bishop Snyder High School, 41-6. The game is set for Friday, Oct. 2, at Lafayette High School. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
