On Monday, Feb. 6, the Sun Conference held its Indoor Track and Field Conference Championships, where 10 schools gathered at Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala., Including Thomas University, where two Branford High School alumni now attend.
Among the student athletes competing were Branford alumni Justin Hernandez and Seth Humphries. In just their freshman season, each have become a fixture in their lineup. Therefore, at the conference championships, both Humphries and Hernandez had high expectations with their school and themselves. They did not disappoint, each placed in the top 10 in two events.
Hernandez finished eight in the one mile event with a time 4:38.86 and fourth in the 1000 meter event. Humphries carried the day for Thomas University by taking first place in both the one mile event with a time of 4:28.323 and the 1,000 meter event with a time of 2:34.47. With the two first place finishes Humphries earned the crown of Conference Champion.
Next for the two former high school standouts is the National Championships in Brookings, S.D., which will be held on Thursday, March 2 and Friday March 3.
