The Lafayette High School girls' varsity basketball team is looking to bounce back after the Christmas break with hopes of a District Tournament appearance. Having struggled to find consistency during the first part of the season, they will look through their young roster for someone to emerge as the clear leader of the team.
The Lady Hornets entered the Christmas break with a 5-6 record, along with district wins over the Branford Lady Buccaneers and Hamilton County Lady Trojans. However, the Lafayette girls are still looking for that signature win to help propel them into the post season with confidence.
To kick off the second half of their season, on Friday, Jan. 6, the Lady Hornets traveled to take on the Hamilton County Lady Trojans. There, they took a step in the right direction behind sophomore Kiley Beach, who went off for 25 points after the team fell behind 13-8 at the end of the first quarter. With the efforts of Beach and the rest of the Lady Hornets, they were about to overcome an early deficit and earn the win, 48-39 and improving their record to 6-6 on the season.
The Lady Hornets then returned home on Tuesday, Jan. 10, to take on the Dixie County Lady Bears, where they fell behind early. In the second half, the Lady Hornets were able to cut into their opponents' lead, only to see the Lady Bears extend their lead back on their way to a 55-37 victory. With the loss, the Lady Hornets' record falls to 6-7 on the season.
The Lady Hornets will be back on the road on Thursday, Jan. 19, as they travel to take on the Trenton Lady Tigers at 6:30 p.m. Trenton High School is located at 1013 N Main St., in Trenton, Fla.
