On Saturday, Nov. 5, the Wellborn Community Association (WCA) organized its Second Annual Cornbread Festival at Andrews Square. Among those that went out of their way to help organize a great event for the community were WCA President Mayso Marti, WCA Vice President Bill Mueller, WCA Secretary Annita Leonard, WCA Treasure Patty Dewitt and WCA Member at Large Calyn Weldon, as well as countless supporters who wish to remain anonymous.
The festival was kicked off with the community's famous blueberry pancakes. Throughout the day, many local artists, including the Rock Bluff Band, filled Andrews Square with their foot-tapping tunes. Vendors and craft booths withstood a bit of rain, enjoying the cool weather that came with it, before resuming the festivities beneath a vibrant rainbow.
Things heated up once again, though, as the highly anticipated Cornbread and Chili Cook-Offs got underway. Also getting everyone's competitive juices flowing were the Amateur and Semi-Pro Cornhole Tournaments. Taking first place in the Cornbread Cook-Off was RIVEROAK Technical College; second place went to Diana Salmone and third place was awarded to Acres Sweets. The winners of the Chili Cook-Off were: Martha Trucker, first place; RIVEROAK Technical College, second place and 100 Acres, third place.
At the competitive level of the cornhole tournament, Curt Ekl and Shan Malchiodi carried the day with their first place win. Finishing second were AJ Glass and Chan Span and rounding out the leaderboard in third place were Andy Buergo and Sanatha Desangles. In the novice and intermediate level, Brady Wilkerson and Trace Wiliikerson took home first place honors, while Sunshine Dicks and Robert Barnes came in second place. Mary Spin and Josh Bronker rounded out the winners with third place.
If the competitions didn't entice the community, there were still plenty of activities to enjoy, including a petting zoo and pony and hay rides, along with many food and craft booths.
