Suwannee County, being a rural area is full of farmers. This has led to a healthy love for the outdoors and agriculture throughout the county’s schools. Starting as early as first-grade, children at Suwannee schools are given a special opportunity to take part in all kinds of outdoor classes. Since the beginning of the school year, Suwannee Pineview Elementary students from Amanda Laws’ first-grade class and Kim Buchanan’s second-grade class have been busy with just such a project. The two classes have been building community centered ideals and learning to work as a team. The goal of the project was to repair and replenish the Suwannee Pineview Elementary garden and the outdoor science laboratory. In doing so, the two classes were taught how to clean and weed a garden. They were also taught how to help care for chickens. Then, they were given the chance to plant pumpkins and marigolds, a project that will come to fruition later in the school year. “One of the key benefits of having a school garden is that, through weekly lessons in the garden, students are learning how to grow, harvest and prepare a variety of foods,” Suwannee Pineview Elementary said in a Facebook post.
