On Monday, Oct. 3, the Branford High School girls' golf team traveled to Lake City to take on the Trenton Lady Tigers at Quail Heights Country Club. The Lady Buccaneers have been led by eighth-grader Claire Bond this season, who has routinely shot in the low 40s this season. Joining her is a host of underclassman with only one senior on their team, McKayla Harrison, who has proven to be the team's anchor.
The match between the two teams was shaping up like any other with no surprises. Bonds led the way for the Lady Bucs with a low score of 42, 10 strokes ahead of the competition. Following her were Kayleigh Wardle and Ashlee Combee, both of whom tied for fourth place on the day with a score of 57. Next was Liberty Ward with a score of 60, finishing just behind Wardle and Combee. Rounding out the day were Harrison and Bella Hobday, who both tied for eighth place with a score of 63.
All six Lady Buccaneers filled up the top 10, claiming a total team low score of 216 compared to the Lady Tigers' score of 223. The Branford girls were back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Perry Golf and Country Club, where they took on the Taylor County Lady Bulldogs.
