Throughout their time at school, students at RIVEROAK Technical College have the chance to be featured as a student spotlight. RIVEROAK takes the time to highlight one of their students, their hard work, their accomplishments and why they chose RIVEROAK as the place to continue their education. This week, Victoria Wood, a Surgical Technology student, was chosen. A course focused on preparing students for a further career in the Health Science career cluster, the Surgical Technology program includes education on interpersonal skills, legal and ethical responsibilities, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, microbiology, aseptic techniques, patient care procedures, surgical technology procedures, patient safety, use and care of equipment and supplies, CPR, employability skills and basic computer literacy.
Wood was nominated by her instructor, Traci West. In regards to Wood, West said, “Victoria is doing a great job in the classroom, as well as the lab. She will begin her clinical rotations in a couple of weeks and is well on her way to becoming a great asset in the operating room.” When asked why she chose RIVEROAK, Wood said, “I heard great things about the program and the instructor. There is a high pass rate, which is great. Surgery, blood and learning about the body was always intriguing to me. I learned a lot about the body when I was a phlebotomist and I wanted to go more in depth.” After finishing her time at RIVEROAK, Wood plans to get a job in a hospital and travel.
