4moms is recalling over 2 million of its MamaRoo and RockaRoo infant swings and rockers due to entanglement and strangulation risks. The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall to go into effect on Monday, August 15, after the 4moms company received two reports of entanglement incidences involving infants who became caught in the strap located under the MamaRoo infant swing. In both cases, the swing was unoccupied and the infant had crawled underneath the seat before getting entangled. One 10- month-old died from asphyxiation, and the other suffered bruising around his neck, but was thankfully rescued by a caregiver in time to spare his life.
The MamaRoo is a baby swing that offers multiple motions and speeds, with buttons on the base that control motion, speed and sound. On the underside of each unit is a model number. Models affected by this recall are MamaRoo models that use a 3-point harness. These include versions 1.0 and 2.0 (model number 4M-005), version 3.0 (model number 1026) and version 4.0 (model number 1037). The MamaRoo models that use a 5-point harness is not included in this recall. The RockaRoo model is also being recalled, although no incidences have yet been reported.
The RockaRoo is a baby rocker with front to back rocking motion, with an analog knob and power button to control the range of motion. The model that is affected by this recall is model number 4M- 012. Model numbers are located on the bottom of the unit.
Consumers with infants who can crawl are advised to stop using the recalled swings and rockers immediately and place them in areas where the child cannot gain access. Additionally, 4moms is requesting that all consumers contact them to register their product for a free strap fastener that will prevent the hazardous straps from extending under the swing when not in use.
