The Branford High School Buccaneers have set a course for Tallahassee and a chance to play for a state title in December. The first step on the “Trek to Tallahassee” takes place on Friday, Sept. 4, as the Bucs kick off their much anticipated 2020 football season at home against a tough Red Devils team from Williston High School. The Bucs are hoping to improve on last season's 6-5 record. The Bucs made it to the playoffs where they were defeated in a heart-breaking 33-34 overtime loss to Hilliard High School.
The Red Devils are coming off a disappointing 1-9 record from 2019, but that record is a bit deceiving. The Red Devils played a very challenging schedule last year and will be eager to improve on that mark this season. The Red Devils feature a very stingy defensive unit, led by defensive tackle Issac Williams, a big 6'2” 310 lb. senior with a talent for breaking up plays.
“[Williston has] always been a tough team with a good mix of size and speed,” said Branford Head Coach Tim Clark. “They are definitely a good challenge for us. Regardless of opponent, the boys are just excited to have the opportunity to play, and they've been working like they're grateful.”
Friday will also be Senior Night for the Bucs. The Bucs will be recognizing seniors from the football team, cheerleaders, band and other members of the Class of 2021. The Senior Night ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m., at Cleve Sikes Field at Buccaneer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Football fans planning to attend the game are urged to call Branford High School at (386) 935-3867 for information about any special limitations and procedures.
