Livestock team finishes third
The 2022 Florida FFA Livestock Evaluation Career Development Event (CDE) State Finals took place at the Horse Teaching Unit on the campus of the University of Florida Saturday, April 9. The livestock evaluation CDE is designed to stimulate learning activities related to the production and marketing of cattle, sheep, goats and swine. The state finals included eight evaluation classes, one set of 10 questions, a written exam, a team exercise and three sets of oral reasons. The CDE is also ran and operated by the University of Florida Department of Animal Science.
The Lafayette FFA Chapter finished third. This was the 10th time in 12 years that the livestock evaluation team finished in the top five. Team members were Carter Higginbotham, Daniela Camarillo, Savanna King, Sidney Wimberley and Peyton Ditter. The team will be recognized on stage at the 94th Florida FFA State Convention in June.
The top five schools were:
1. Colonial High School – 1,985 points
2. Santa Fe High School – 1,984 points
3. Lafayette High School – 1,966 points
4. Durant High School – 1,924 points
5. DeLand High School – 1,924 points
Meats Evaluation Teams finish in the top 10
The 2022 Florida FFA Meats Evaluation State Finals took place Saturday, April 16 at the University of Florida’s Meats Laboratory on the campus of the University of Florida. The Meats Evaluation Career Development Event (CDE) is designed to stimulate learning activities related to the processing of beef, pork and lamb carcasses, including retail cut identification and factors affecting meat quality. The CDE included an evaluation practicum of placing classes, beef quality and yield grades, value-based pricing and questions classes, an identification practicum of retail cut identification and a problem solving practicum of meat formulation problem. The state finals included the top ten middle school teams and the top 20 high school teams from the February preliminary contest at the Florida State Fair.
The Lafayette Middle School team finished third and the Lafayette High School team finished 10th. The middle school team members were Silas Fletcher (State High Individual), Caden Boatright, Wyatt Chandler, Olivia Krok and Holland Jackson. The high school team members were Jack Peterson, Seth Greaves, Madison King and Regina Camarillo. Both teams were coached by Case Emerson, the University of Florida spring intern. The chapter appreciates the Mayo Thriftway meat department for hosting several practices.

5. Bartow Middle School – 1,243 points

2. Apopka High School – 2,042 points
3. South Sumter High School – 2,033 points
4. Okeechobee Brahman High School – 1,954 points
5. Lake Butler High School – 1,933 points
6. Durant High School – 1,929 points
7. West Orange High School – 1,901 points
8. Strawberry Crest Junior High School – 1,896 points
9. Marianna High School – 1,892 points
10. Lafayette High School – 1,888 points
2022 Livestock Show chapter pig and steer buyers
The Lafayette FFA Chapter exhibited chapter animals at the 2022 North Florida Livestock Show in Madison and the 2022 Suwannee Valley Youth Livestock Show in Live Oak. The chapter wishes to thank the following individuals, families and businesses that financially contributed to the chapter animals.
