Thomas Lester McCray, known as “Tommy” to his family and friends, 49, passed away on March 19, 2022, in Tallahassee, Fla. Tommy was born May 22, 1972, in Lake City, Fla., to Charles Wayman McCray and Dwala Louise Land McCray. He was a 1990 graduate of Lafayette High School, where he played on the varsity baseball team. He also attended Santa Fe Community College, where he played on the Santa Fe baseball team. In the years following, he played Class A travel league softball with several teams. He was of the Christian faith and attended the Alton Church of God. He worked as a Correctional Officer at Mayo Florida State Correctional for 27 years before his retirement. He then acquired his CDL license and drove a semi for numerous companies, until he went to work for JLM as a Millwright. He was a loving and devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and brother, who enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding his side by side, watching Gator sports and spending time with his friends and family. Tommy was preceded in death by his father, Wayman McCray.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Christy McCray; his mother, Dwala McCray, of Mayo; four daughters, Megan Raulerson and husband Coleton, of Lawrenceville, Ga., Macayla Blawn, of Mayo, Mia Murray and husband Mickey, of Lake City and Kaitlyn Blawn, of Mayo; one brother, Todd McCray and wife Kristi, of St. Augustine; one granddaughter, Camilla Murray, as well as numerous other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 25, at the Alton Church of God with Bro. Tim Hamm officiating. Interment followed in Alton Cemetery. The family received friends from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. prior to the service. All arrangements are under the care of Burns Funeral Home of Mayo.
