On Thursday, Jan. 20, the Branford High School Lady Buccaneers weightlifting team traveled to Chiefland High School for the Class 1A District 7 Championships. The Lady Buccaneers had high hopes for the match; after a great season, coach Misty Ward knew her girls had a real shot at making some noise, but not even she could have predicted how dominant the Lady Buccaneers would be. With 19 Buccaneers competing in individual classes, all 19 members advanced into the regional round of playoffs at Father Lopez Catholic High School in Daytona Beach, Fla., on Saturday, Jan. 29.
The Lady Buccaneers took first place in seven of the 10 classes. The traditional weightlifting match was more of the same. Again, the Lady Buccaneers dominated, winning six of the 10 classes and placing second in four different weight classes.
While weightlifting may appear to be an individual sport, it is not. These young ladies push one another to be better and better every day for an opportunity such as laying claim to the Class 1A District 7 Championship. The Lady Buccaneers stood atop the podium in individual classes and as a team, outscoring their opponents by 22 points with 82 total points on the day
